I wanted to provide you with an update regarding burglary, which people around your area have highlighted as an issue of concern on the priority survey. Your Local Police Officers Are Out on Patrol
We want to reassure you that your local officers are actively patrolling the area to keep our community safe. As part of our commitment to crime prevention, please consider the following security measures for your property:
Secure Fencing and Gates
Install a robust, vertically slatted timber fence at least 1.8m high, positioned as close to the front building line as possible to avoid recesses. Ensure panels are mechanically bonded to posts to prevent easy removal. Fit gates with a five-lever mortice deadlock (BS 3621), operable by key on both sides. Use galvanised steel hinges that cannot be lifted, and consider adding a fragile trellis topping (minimum 0.3m) for extra deterrence.
Target Hardening of Doors and Windows
UPVC doors/windows: Aim for PAS 24:2022 security rating with a Sold Secure Diamond or 3-star cylinder lock (DHF TS 007). Timber front doors: Fit a BS 8621 mortice deadlock (bottom third) and a BS 8621 rim nightlatch (top third). Rear timber doors: Use a BS 3621 mortice sashlock with additional rack bolts or locking surface bolts at top and bottom. Reinforce timber doors with hinge bolts, plus London and Birmingham bars for added strength.
Glazing Security
Reinforce accessible glazing with anti-shatter security laminate (BS EN 356:2000 class P2A) or install internal retractable grilles (LPS 1175 A1) for extra protection.
Your vigilance and cooperation help us keep crime out of our community. If you have any concerns or need advice, please contact your local policing team.
Stay safe and thank you for your continued support.
While we will continue to pursue burglars in the area, there are steps you can do to help keep your property safe. Make sure that you: Double lock your door every time you leave the house If you can, move garden furniture or bins away from windows so that thieves cannot use them to gain access. Use laminated glass or security film on ground floor and accessible windows. Use a sash stop if you have sash windows to prevent people opening them enough to climb through. If your windows open outwards, use a key operated lock – check these are locked before leaving the house. Make sure all valuables are out of sight. Keep handbags and keys away from letterboxes or cat flaps. In the evening shut the curtains and leave lights on. Set your burglar alarm Lock your shed or garage Mark, register or record your valuables.
